ABOUT MOBC

NEW MEMBERS’ ORIENTATION (NEMO)
Who is Mt. Olive? The best way to discover who we are as a church is to visit.  The second best way is to attend our New Members’ Orientation (NEMO) class.  This class is also open to those who are considering membership.

The NEMO class is seven weeks in duration.  Currently, these sessions are held periodically on Sunday morning from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The topics addressed are:

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN?
In part one of this two-part session, we discuss the derivation of the word "Christian", as well as its usage in scripture.  We also discuss being a Christian with respect to the necessity, the Provider, the essential elements and the process and provision of salvation.  In part two of this session, we discuss the Holy Spirit's specific role in our salvation.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BAPTIST?
In these three-part sessions, we study Baptist “distinctives” such as believer’s baptism (Mark 16:16), regenerate membership (John 3:3-8), congregational polity (Acts 6:1-7) and freedom from civil government interference (Matthew 22:15-22).  In addition, we study key Baptist beliefs such as the Virgin birth (Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:27, 34), God incarnate (John 1:14), Christ Jesus’ crucifixion (1 Peter 2:24), Christ Jesus’ resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) and Christ Jesus’ return (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).  Also, an overview of the Articles of Faith is provided.  The Articles of Faith are 18 doctrinal (principal) statements of Baptists.  Ordinances observed, scriptural offices recognized and admission and dismissal from Baptist churches are topics that are covered as well.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AS A MEMBER OF MT. OLIVE?
In this session, we cover the ways that Mt. Olive fulfils her mission through worship, study, service opportunities and other necessary assistance.

WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU AS A MEMBER
In this session, we cover Mt. Olive’s stewardship (i.e., time, talents/spiritual gifts, tithe) expectations of members.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS INVENTORY (CONNECTING YOU IN THE BODY)
The Spiritual Gifts’ Inventory is an assessment that we administer to help new members with identification or confirmation of their spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, 28; Ephesians 4:11; 1 Peter 4:10, 11) for the purpose of giving service in the body and beyond.
